Cradle Hill Community Primary School

English

Intent

We aim to…

At Cradle Hill we provide high quality reading and writing experiences.

We read widely and often, for both pleasure and information, using high quality texts to engage children as readers and writers.

We have a growth mindset towards English and believe everyone is capable of being able to read and write successfully and see making mistakes as an opportunity to learn.

We make talk central to our lessons so that our children become competent in the arts of speaking and listening, making formal presentations, demonstrating to others and participating in debate.  We promote collaboration and sharing of ideas through class discussion.

We ensure children develop the skills which enable them to write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences.

We aim for all children to acquire a wide vocabulary and a purposeful understanding of grammar.

Implementation

We will achieve our aims by…

We have a culture of high expectations of our pupils and strive to make the English curriculum engaging and accessible to all.

We ensure small steps in progression and careful lesson planning build on prior learning and knowledge supported by Little Wandle, No Nonsense Spelling and Destination Reader.

In English, our children are immersed within language rich learning environments which provide them with the appropriate scaffolding needed to work towards independence.

Our children are given a variety of experiences both in and out of the classroom to create memorable learning opportunities, to apply their knowledge to wider concepts and to further support and develop their understanding and language acquisition. Pupil voice is used to inform our planning.

Staff model writing to explicitly demonstrate grammatical features, impactful vocabulary choices specific to the genre of writing being taught, purposeful editing and high-quality presentation.

Staff model reading to explicitly demonstrate fluency, expression and intonation. We teach Reading as a whole class, small groups and individually.

Interventions for Reading include Little Wandle Catch up sessions, individual phonic / small group sessions, Lexia and Herts for Learning Reading Fluency.

Staff meet on a regular basis to moderate using standardised materials and have opportunities to access high quality and regular CPD opportunities.

Impact

How we will know we achieved our aims…

At Cradle Hill, our children leave us with a love of Literature and Reading which promotes high standards of English, allowing them to develop a strong command of the spoken and written word.  Our rich and inclusive curriculum will allow children to realise their potential and achieve their dreams wherever they live and whatever their background.

Pupil voice reflects that our children have a positive attitude to Reading and Writing.

Children’s books demonstrate that they are acquiring knowledge, skills and vocabulary in a coherent sequence so that they know more and remember more. Children take pride in the presentation and quality of their work.

Impact is shown through the progress and outcomes of children in national and summative testing throughout the academic year.
